Edelweiss A320: Rejected Takeoff Zurich Due to Engine Failure

An Edelweiss A320 operating a scheduled service to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt from Zürich rejected a takeoff at high speed in Zurich on 20 April 2024.

Edelweiss flight WK140, an Airbus A320-200 was under acceleration on Zürich RWY32 when flight crew initiated a rejected takeoff at high speed.

The abort procedure was reportedly conducted after crew noted a compressor stall on the left-hand engine.

The aircraft decelerated safely under control and the runway was subsequently vacated. The rejected takeoff procedure was conducted at approximately 100 knots ground speed during the takeoff roll.

Flight WK140 then returned to the airport apron without further incident. It appears that the flight was then subsequently undertaken by a replacement A320 aircraft registered HB-IJW

The aircraft conducting the aborted WK140 service for Sharm el-Sheikh airport was an Airbus A320-200, registered HB-IJU.

This is a 21.2-year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the Swiss carrier Edelweiss. The aircraft has been in service with the airline since March 2003. The Airbus A320 is equipped with CFM-56 engines.

Edelweiss is a Swiss airline headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland. It is the leading leisure airline in Switzerland, offering flights from Zurich Airport to over 90 popular holiday destinations.

 Its network spans destinations in Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, the Indian Ocean, North and Central America, and the Caribbean.

The airline was founded in 1995 and started operations in 1996. It is a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, which also owns Swiss International Air Lines. Edelweiss presently operates a fleet of Airbus A320 and Airbus A340 aircraft.
