Shumaker partner David Axelrod leads successful defense.

Toledo, OH – Shumaker, a leading national law firm, is pleased to announce that Partner David Axelrod has successfully defended former Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, leading to the closure of a prolonged public corruption investigation. After six years of intense scrutiny, Rosenberger has been officially cleared of all allegations.

On May 22, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, Ken Parker, sent a letter to Mr. Axelrod, confirming that the Rosenberger investigation is closed.

“Receiving a closing letter from the Department of Justice is a rare and significant victory,” said Shumaker Partner David Axelrod. “It underscores the effectiveness of our legal strategy, and more important, Speaker Rosenberger’s innocence.”

In April 2018, amidst inquiries from the FBI, Rosenberger retained Axelrod to represent him. Shortly thereafter, Rosenberger resigned from his position as Ohio House Speaker, marking the first resignation of an Ohio speaker in over 50 years.

“We are extremely proud of David’s work in this case, which is a testament to his legal acumen, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice,” said Michael O’Callaghan, Managing Partner of Shumaker’s Columbus Office. “His ability to navigate such a challenging legal landscape and achieve a successful resolution reflects the high standards of excellence and integrity that define our firm.”

Shumaker Partner and Litigation and Disputes Regional Service Line Leader Mark Wagoner served as co-counsel.
