Heavy Rain Causes Flooding and Disruptions at Dubai Airport DXB

3 min read

Earlier today, Tuesday, April 16th, heavy rain and severe weather conditions caused disruptions to flights at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

An earlier report by DXB airport advised of delays with arriving and departing flights. Several flights were cancelled throughout the morning, with others diverted to alternate airports.

Flight Delays and Cancellations

Extreme downpours have persisted throughout the morning, triggering strong flooding across Dubai. Estimates suggest more than 100 millimeters of rain have fallen.

A total of 17 flights were cancelled, including nine outbound and eight inbound flights. Three flights were diverted to other airports, and there may have been delays for other arriving and departing flights.

Video footage surfacing on social media shows a deluge of rain across the tarmac and apron areas at Dubai International Airport.

Other airports experienced flight delays, including Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport and Sharjah International Airport.

UAE Forecast Weather Conditions

The UAE National Centre of Meteorology has forecast unstable weather with moderate to strong wind conditions persisting throughout the day.

Strong winds and heavy rain prompted authorities to advise residents of the seven emirates to stay home.

According to reports, one of the diverted flights has now already returned to DXB.

What to Do If You Have a Flight to or from Dubai

If you have a flight to or from Dubai, here are some recommendations:

  • Check with your airline directly to get the latest information on the status of your flight. This is the most important step, as your airline will have the most up-to-date information on your specific flight.
  • Allow extra travel time to get to the airport in case of road congestion. The heavy rain may have caused traffic jams, so it is important to allow extra time to get to the airport to avoid missing your flight.
  • Consider using the Dubai Metro for a smoother journey to the airport. The Dubai Metro is a fast and efficient way to get to the airport, and it can help you avoid traffic congestion.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure a smooth travel experience despite the earlier weather disruptions.
