Ryanair B737-8 Returns Tenerife Due Smoke Indication

A Ryanair flight bound for Edinburgh made a precautionary return to Tenerife after flight crew received a cabin smoke indication on 19 May 2024.

Ryanair flight FR2970, a Boeing 737-8 MAX had departed Tenerife South Airport (TFS) and was on climb when flight crew noted the anomaly.

Flight crew reported that they had received a smoke indication alert for the cabin. The operating crew then terminated the climb and the decision was made to return to Tenerife.

The aircraft subsequently made a safe landing on runway RWY07 TFS, less than one hour after the initial departure.

After a short delay on the ground, the flight recommenced and transited to Edinburgh.

Flight data shows that Ryanair flight FR2970 made and on time departure out of Tenerife TFS at 2045 local time on 19 May.

The aircraft then set because normally and had passed through flight level FL330 (33,000 feet) before the flight crew terminated the climb procedure.

The flight was then to the north of Tenerife, and a descent and direct return was negotiated. Flight crew did not declare a formal emergency and the aircraft returned under normal squawk.

The aircraft conducting the FR2970 service to Edinburgh Airport (EDI) was a Boeing 737-8 MAX, registered EI-IJI. This is a 0.3-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Ryanair.

It has been in active service with the airline since its initial delivery in February 2024.
