Is the New Ocean Infinity Search About to Begin?

5 min read

Ten years after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a renewed sense of hope is emerging for the families of the 239 people on board, with a new search by Ocean Infinity looming.

Recent vessel tracking data suggests that Ocean Infinity, a marine exploration company, has now dispatched one of its Armada ships towards the Southern Indian Ocean.

Having conducted operations near Mauritius, it is now reported to be on the move. The southerly course takes it to the search area where the missing Boeing 777 is believed to have crashed. This vessel movement strongly suggests that the new search operation for MH370 is imminent.

Armada 78 06 on the Move

Recent vessel tracking data indicates that at least one Ocean Infinity ship, the Armada 78 06, is currently underway. The recent tracking shows the ship has moved from Mauritius and is currently heading towards a location designated as “Offshore Australia.”

Shipping experts and MH370 enthusiasts closely monitor vessel movements, and this particular voyage is generating considerable excitement.

The estimated arrival date for Armada 7806 in the designated area is around February 23, 2025. “Offshore Australia” is a a very general term. In the context of MH370, it strongly suggests the ship is en route to the prospective search zone in the Southern Indian Ocean.

New Search Area and Agreement

This news follows reports from late 2024 that the Malaysian government had reached an agreement in principle with Ocean Infinity. The agreement floated was to conduct a new “no find, no fee” underwater survey.

The proposed search area is approximately 15,000 square kilometers. This area is newly defined, based on refined analysis and expert opinions regarding the possible crash location of MH370.

The new search area will take in locations proposed by three research groups. The three groups are the MH370-Caption team, headed by Captain Patrick Blelley and Jean Luc Marchand; the Independent Group, and Richard Godfrey’s WSPR analysis team.

Additionally, a number of research groups have contributed expertise and input to Ocean Infinity. The new search broadens the region under investigation beyond the ‘seventh arc’ where previous searches were focused.

The new search is anticipated to take place between January and April 2025. This seeks to take advantage of favourable weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere.

A Decade of Questions

Flight MH370 vanished on 8 March 2014, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. Extensive international search efforts covering hundreds of thousands of square kilometres have seen been conducted. Despite the search intensity, the main wreckage of the Boeing 777 has never been found.

Previous searches, including one conducted by Ocean Infinity in 2018, yielded no success in locating the aircraft.

However, advancements in technology and oceanographic analysis have led to the identification of this new search area. The advancements, coupled with data from recovered debris, offers a renewed opportunity to solve this aviation enigma.

Families Hold onto Hope

For the families of those on board MH370, the news of a potential new search is perhaps bittersweet. It undoubtedly brings with it a mixture of hope and cautious optimism. They have tirelessly campaigned for further investigation, seeking closure and answers after years of uncertainty. Each new lead and search effort represents a chance to finally understand what happened. For the families it provides a sense of closure, and brings an end to their agonizing wait for answers.

Terms Being Finalized

The movement of Armada 78 06 is a strong indication that preparations are underway. However, it’s important to note that the final contract between Ocean Infinity and the Malaysian government is still being finalized.

Details regarding the financial terms and operational specifics are expected to be released once the agreement is formally concluded. It is speculated that Ocean Infinity may possibly commence the search ahead of the contract finalization.

Looking Ahead

The coming weeks and months will be critical as Ocean Infinity potentially embarks on this new mission. The world will be watching closely, hoping that this renewed effort will finally bring answers to one of aviation’s greatest mysteries. Importantly, it will provide some measure of peace for the families of MH370 victims.

The deployment of Ocean Infinity’s ships to the Southern Ocean signals a significant step in this direction, reigniting hope that the truth behind MH370 may finally be within reach.

This article is based on publicly available information and shipping data as of February 17, 2025.

While vessel tracking data and reports suggest Ocean Infinity’s move to commence a new MH370 search, official confirmation from Ocean Infinity or the Malaysian government the search is underway has not yet been made.
