A collision involving two private jets at Scottsdale Airport, AZ on Monday afternoon has resulted in at least one fatality and multiple injuries.
The fatal accident has caused significant disruption, with the airport’s runway remaining closed indefinitely.
The FAA confirmed that the accident occurred around 2.45pm local time when a Learjet 35A veered off the runway after landing.
Ground Collision at Scottsdale Airport
According to a spokesperson for Scottsdale Airport, the Learjet’s left hand main landing gear collapsed on landing.
The landing aircraft then slid before striking a larger Gulfstream 200 jet which was parked on the ramp. The force of the impact resulted in significant damage to both aircraft. First responders rushed to the scene, where they reported one death.
Two injured individuals were transported to local trauma centers, while another was treated at a hospital and is currently in stable condition. The identities of the deceased and injured have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The Learjet 35A, registered N199DF, reportedly belongs to Mötley Crüe vocalist Vince Neil. It is not known who was aboard the aircraft at the time of the collision.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the accident.
Investigators will typically examine various factors, including pilot error, mechanical failure, and weather conditions, to determine what led to the ground collision. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) may also be involved in the investigation.
Scottsdale Airport is a popular hub for private jet travel, particularly during high-profile events like the recent Waste Management Open golf tournament.
The closure is likely to cause delays and cancellations for numerous flights, impacting both business and leisure travelers. Airport authorities are advising passengers to check with air operators for the latest flight information.
