London Stansted Airport has submitted a planning application to Uttlesford District Council to raise its annual passenger cap to 51 million over the next two decades.
The proposal focuses on optimizing the airport’s single runway by the 2040s without increasing the number of permitted flights or expanding the airport’s boundaries.
Stansted Airport Expansion Plan
If approved, this plan will unlock significant benefits for the region. It promises to create 4,500 new jobs, improve M11 Junction 8 to ease traffic congestion, and fund enhancements to local bus services and roads.
The initiative also includes measures to tackle unauthorized parking, upgrades to the Stansted Express train service, and a commitment to power airport infrastructure with 100% renewable energy.
Additionally, Stansted Airport College will double in size, offering more training opportunities for local youth. The airport aims for half of all passenger journeys to use public transport, reducing pressure on local roads.
To shape this vision, Stansted engaged with the community over recent months through a robust consultation process.
A widespread social media campaign and hundreds of one-on-one discussions gathered input from residents, businesses, and travellers. Of the 2,800 people who responded, nearly 2,000 expressed support for the airport’s growth plans.
Gareth Powell, London Stansted’s Managing Director, emphasized the airport’s commitment to responsible expansion. “We’ve carefully considered feedback from our neighbors to ensure we grow sustainably,” he said.
“This application builds on our £1.2 billion, five-year investment program to transform the airport. Approval will unlock jobs, training, and better passenger facilities while offering more flight options to diverse destinations.”
Powell underscored the airport’s ambitious goals, urging community support to bring the plan to life. “By making the best use of our existing runway, we can create opportunities and improvements that benefit the region for decades,” he added.

In May, the Easter getaway helped boost London Stansted’s April traffic figures as a record-breaking 2.5 million passengers passed through the airport during the month.
The monthly total was an increase of 2.2% on last April, beating the previous record high for the month in 2024 by nearly 54,000.
London Stansted welcomed 1.5 million passengers during the two-week Easter holidays alone and recorded its busiest day of the year so far with more than 94,000 passengers taking to the skies on Good Friday.
The airport’s extensive route network currently spans over 200 destinations across Europe and beyond.
The number of passengers using London Stansted in the last 12 months has grown to 29.95 million, an increase of 4.5% on the previous year.
