UK electric aviation pioneer Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) has achieved a milestone in European aviation history. The company successfully completed the first-ever piloted wingborne flight of a winged electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in open airspace.
Vertical carried out the historic flight at Cotswolds Airport in the UK. It marks a significant step toward revolutionizing air travel with sustainable, electric-powered aircraft.
Chief Test Pilot Si Davies piloted the VX4 prototype. The flight demonstrated the aircraft’s ability to take off, fly, and land like a conventional aircraft, generating lift through its wings.
This achievement is a critical advancement in Vertical’s Flightpath 2030 strategy. It brings the company closer to commercial passenger operations.
A Landmark Flight Over the Cotswolds
The Vertical Aerospace VX4 prototype operated above the UK countryside, after taking off from Cotswold Airport. This is the largest private airport in the UK. The flight, approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), followed a review of extensive safety and technical documentation.
The CAA extended Vertical’s Permit to Fly, allowing the aircraft to operate in open airspace for the first time. This milestone underscores the rigorous safety standards that Vertical adheres to as it progresses toward certification for commercial use.

Chief Test Pilot Si Davies described the experience as a career highlight. “Flying the VX4 over the Cotswolds was truly special,” he said. “Our performance predictions were spot on, and the aircraft handled beautifully.”
“It’s safe, responsive, and a joy to fly. The low noise from the propellers made the cockpit environment pleasant, a testament to the incredible work of our team.” The VX4’s smooth performance during this wingborne flight highlights its potential to deliver a quiet, efficient, and comfortable flying experience.
Why Wingborne Flight Matters
Wingborne flight, the focus of Vertical’s Phase 3 testing, allows the VX4 to operate like a traditional airplane. It generates lift through its wings rather than relying solely on rotor thrust.
This mode of flight is quieter, more energy-efficient, and capable of longer ranges. This is a critical element of practical and scalable electric aviation.
By achieving stable and controlled wingborne flight, Vertical Aerospace has demonstrated the VX4’s ability to perform under real world conditions. The aircraft reached speeds of up to 150 mph (120 knots) and altitudes of nearly 2,000 feet.
The flight also generated valuable data, with engineers collecting over 30,000 in-flight parameters. These metrics confirmed the aircraft’s exceptional performance in stability, control, and energy efficiency.
This now paves the way for the next major milestone: a full piloted transition flight. Scheduled for the second half of 2025, this test will showcase the VX4’s ability to easily switch between vertical lift and forward cruise, the operational mode required for passenger services.

Leading the Way in eVTOL Development
Vertical Aerospace is the only company worldwide flying a piloted winged eVTOL prototype developed under a Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the CAA. This approval is a requirement for obtaining a Type Certificate, which is necessary for commercial passenger operations.
The CAA is working closely with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to ensure the VX4 meets the highest safety standards for global certification.
Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical Aerospace, emphasized the significance of this achievement. “This flight is a pivotal moment in our certification journey,” he said. “Operating under the UK’s stringent regulatory framework ensures that every step is thoroughly vetted.”
“Placing a pilot in the VX4 early in testing provides critical insights that simulations can’t replicate. This milestone validates the aircraft’s capabilities and the maturity of our program as we move toward commercial operations.”
